How to Negotiate Salary in Kenya ÔÇö Without Burning Bridges
A practical script for the most uncomfortable conversation in your career.
Most Kenyans never negotiate. The result: years of underpayment compounded by the fact that every future raise is a percentage of your starting (low) base.
Before the offer
Research the market. Look at BrighterMonday salary guides, Glassdoor Kenya, and ask 2-3 people in your network at similar roles. Have a target number.
When the offer comes
Never say yes immediately. The right answer is: "Thank you so much. I am excited about the role. Can I take 24 hours to think through the details?"
The follow-up
"Thanks again. I am very keen on joining. The base salary you proposed is KES X. Based on the market data I gathered for this role and my Y years of experience, I was hoping for KES Z. Is there flexibility?"
What if they say no?
Negotiate other things: signing bonus, leave days, training budget, start date, remote work, performance review timing.
What if they pull the offer?
They will not. Reasonable, polite negotiation never costs anyone an offer in Kenya. The worst that happens: they say "this is our final offer" and you decide.
