National Endowment for Democracy Grants 2026: Funding for NGOs, Civil Society and Independent Media Worldwide

<p data-start="113" data-end="447">The <strong data-start="117" data-end="179">National Endowment for Democracy (NED) Grants Program 2026</strong> is accepting proposals from independent nongovernmental organizations working to advance democratic values, strengthen institutions, protect human rights, support independent media, promote civic participation and improve accountability in countries around the world.</p> <p data-start="449" data-end="923">Each year, the National Endowment for Democracy awards <strong data-start="504" data-end="530">more than 2,000 grants</strong> to nongovernmental groups implementing democracy-related projects in more than 100 countries. The program is particularly designed for local and independent organizations working in challenging political environments, including emerging democracies, countries undergoing political transitions, semi-authoritarian settings and highly repressive societies.</p> <p class="" data-start="925" data-end="1316">The next proposal submission deadline is <strong data-start="966" data-end="988">September 21, 2026</strong>. NED makes funding decisions three times each year through its Board of Directors, with additional proposal deadlines currently scheduled for <strong data-start="1131" data-end="1151">January 27, 2027</strong> and <strong data-start="1156" data-end="1173">June 28, 2027</strong>. Proposals received after a deadline are normally moved to consideration at the following Board meeting.</p> <p data-start="1318" data-end="1573">The general NED grant page does <strong data-start="1350" data-end="1408">not publish a standard minimum or maximum grant amount</strong>. Eligibility is not determined only by where the organization is legally based; the location and nature of the proposed project are also relevant.</p> <h2 data-section-id="ftzi0d" data-start="4098" data-end="4144">Does an Organization Need to Be Registered?</h2> <p data-start="4146" data-end="4296">The NED application requirements ask registered organizations to provide a Certificate of Registration or another document demonstrating legal status.</p> <p data-start="4298" data-end="4419">However, the official application page also provides instructions for organizations that are <strong data-start="4391" data-end="4418">not formally registered</strong>.</p> <p data-start="4421" data-end="4552">If an organization is unregistered, it does not submit registration documents. Human Rights and the Rule of Law</h3> <p data-start="5160" data-end="5257">NED supports programs designed to promote and defend human rights and strengthen the rule of law.</p> <p data-start="5259" data-end="5402">Projects in this area may involve organizations working on issues such as rights awareness, legal accountability, civic freedoms or monitoring.</p> <p data-start="5404" data-end="5548">Applicants should clearly explain the democratic problem they seek to address and how their proposed activities contribute to meaningful change.</p> <h2 data-section-id="18g709z" data-start="5550" data-end="5600">2. Freedom of Information and Independent Media</h2> <p data-start="5602" data-end="5696">Supporting access to reliable information and independent media is another major NED priority.</p> <p data-start="5698" data-end="5834">Eligible organizations may include independent media groups or civil society organizations working to strengthen freedom of information.</p> <p data-start="5836" data-end="5983">NED explicitly identifies <strong data-start="5862" data-end="5883">independent media</strong> among the types of nongovernmental organizations it may fund.</p> <h2 data-section-id="1jv9b24" data-start="5985" data-end="6018">3. Democratic Ideas and Values</h2> <p data-start="6020" data-end="6192">Projects may seek to strengthen understanding of democratic principles, political pluralism, citizen participation, institutional accountability or other democratic values.</p> <p data-start="6194" data-end="6337">Applicants should demonstrate how project activities go beyond broad awareness raising and contribute to clearly defined democratic objectives.</p> <h2 data-section-id="yti4xr" data-start="6339" data-end="6376">4. Accountability and Transparency</h2> <p data-start="6378" data-end="6453">NED supports programs that promote greater accountability and transparency.</p> <p data-start="6455" data-end="6605">Relevant initiatives may seek to strengthen citizens&#8217; ability to understand, monitor or engage with institutions and public decision-making processes.</p> <p data-start="6607" data-end="6746">Accountability should be linked to a clearly articulated democratic outcome rather than treated merely as a technical administrative issue.</p> <h2 data-section-id="1410yan" data-start="6748" data-end="6795">5. Strengthening Civil Society Organizations</h2> <p data-start="6797" data-end="6879">Institutional and programmatic strengthening of civil society is another priority.</p> <p data-start="6881" data-end="7169">Civil society organizations often operate at the intersection of communities, institutions and decision-makers. NED therefore supports work intended to strengthen the ability of independent organizations to participate effectively in democratic life.</p> <h2 data-section-id="4561ns" data-start="7171" data-end="7224">6. Democratic Political Processes and Institutions</h2> <p data-start="7226" data-end="7315">Projects can also focus on strengthening democratic political processes and institutions.</p> <p data-start="7317" data-end="7605">The grant program is explicitly nonpartisan. Applicants should therefore frame projects around strengthening democratic systems, participation, processes and institutions rather than supporting individual political candidates or partisan interests.</p> <h2 data-section-id="lxku80" data-start="7607" data-end="7628">7. Civic Education</h2> <p data-start="7630" data-end="7696">NED identifies <strong data-start="7645" data-end="7664">civic education</strong> as a specific funding priority.</p> <p data-start="7698" data-end="7846">Projects may help citizens better understand democratic institutions, civic rights and responsibilities, participation mechanisms or related issues.</p> <p data-start="7848" data-end="7961">Applicants should clearly identify the audience, methods and expected outcomes of any civic education initiative.</p> <h2 data-section-id="1hbhz5y" data-start="7963" data-end="7999">8. Democratic Conflict Resolution</h2> <p data-start="8001" data-end="8128">Organizations developing nonviolent and democratic approaches to resolving political or social conflicts may also seek support.</p> <p data-start="8130" data-end="8258">The connection between the proposed intervention and democratic conflict resolution should be explicit in the project narrative.</p> <h2 data-section-id="1jsurbk" data-start="8260" data-end="8288">9. Freedom of Association</h2> <p data-start="8290" data-end="8344">NED supports efforts promoting freedom of association.</p> <p data-start="8346" data-end="8504">This may be particularly significant in environments where civic groups, associations, independent organizations or other collective actors face restrictions.</p> <h2 data-section-id="yshq6s" data-start="8506" data-end="8539">10.
