Call for Applications: Feminist Africa Online Writing Workshop 2026

<p>Are you an Africa-based early career researcher working on feminist or gender analysis in the social sciences? The Feminist Africa Journal is inviting eligible researchers to apply for its 4-day Online Writing Workshop, scheduled to take place from 16 to 19 November 2026.</p> <p>The workshop is designed to support early career scholars in transforming draft research papers into publishable journal articles while strengthening their academic writing, feminist research, and publication skills.</p> <h2>About Feminist Africa</h2> <p>Feminist Africa is a continental Gender Studies Journal established in 2002 at the African Gender Institute of the University of Cape Town. Following the Yiri Consensus of 2018, the journal moved to the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana.</p> <p>For more than two decades, Feminist Africa has provided a platform for intellectual and activist research, dialogue, and strategy focused on postcolonial feminism.</p> <p>The journal describes itself as a transformative, anti-imperialist, and anti-colonial scholarly journal committed to “building skills as it grows” through collaborative training interventions, internships, and workshops.</p> <h2>About the Online Writing Workshop</h2> <p>The 4-day online workshop is designed to provide Africa-based early career researchers with the intellectual space, mentorship, and training needed to develop a draft research paper into a publishable journal article.</p> <p>The programme responds to the challenge that much of the feminist research conducted, particularly at the graduate level, remains unpublished and therefore has limited visibility and impact beyond academic theses.</p> <p>Through seminars, writing sessions, and mentorship, the workshop will help participants strengthen their research-to-publication journey and deepen the impact of feminist scholarship produced by early career researchers in Africa.</p> <h2>Objectives of the Workshop</h2> <p>The workshop aims to:</p> <ul> <li>Strengthen the academic writing skills of African early career scholars, with particular attention to female scholars.</li> <li>Improve the success rate of early career African scholars submitting manuscripts to high-quality journals.</li> <li>Build a network of Africa-based scholars working on feminist and gender analysis.</li> </ul> <h2>Workshop Structure</h2> <p>The 4-day programme will be organised as an online writing retreat featuring daily seminars and dedicated writing sessions.</p> <p>The seminars will include:</p> <ul> <li>Practical guidance on academic writing.</li> <li>Mentorship on formulating feminist research questions.</li> <li>Guidance on publishing in high-quality academic journals.</li> <li>Support for developing draft research into a publishable journal article.</li> </ul> <h2>Funding Support</h2> <p>Successful applicants will receive funding support to help cover the cost of high-speed internet access during the workshop.</p> <h2>Eligibility</h2> <p>Applications are open to early career researchers who meet the following criteria:</p> <ul> <li>Hold a doctorate awarded within five years of the application deadline, meaning the doctoral certificate must have been awarded after July 2021 and by July 2026.</li> <li>Are employed at a recognised university or research institute in Sub-Saharan Africa.</li> <li>Are fluent in written and spoken English, as no translation services will be provided.</li> </ul> <p>The selection criteria also indicate that applicants may be considered if they have written evidence from a supervisor confirming teaching and satisfactory research progress towards a PhD over the last five years.</p> <h2>Application Requirements</h2> <p>Applicants must submit:</p> <ol> <li>A motivation letter of no more than one page explaining their interest in the workshop and what they hope to gain from participating.</li> <li>A draft basic research paper of 5,000–8,000 words in English containing original data and preliminary data analysis.</li> <li>An abstract of the research paper of no more than 500 words.</li> <li>A full CV.</li> <li>A PhD award certificate, where applicable.</li> </ol> <h2>Selection Criteria</h2> <p>Applications will be assessed through a strictly merit-based selection process.</p> <p>The main selection criteria include:</p> <ul> <li>A PhD certificate granted between July 2021 and July 2026, or written evidence from a supervisor of teaching and satisfactory research progress towards a PhD over the last five years.</li> <li>Employment at a university or research institute on the African continent.</li> <li>Excellence, relevance, and
