1. What Is the EDSAFE AI Fellowship?

The EDSAFE AI Fellowship is a leadership development initiative established to connect and empower underrepresented thought leaders in the field of Artificial Intelligence in education.

The fellowship recognises that the future of education should not be shaped exclusively by technology developers or AI companies. Instead, educators, education administrators, researchers, policymakers, women technologists, institutional leaders and other stakeholders must actively participate in determining how AI technologies are developed, introduced and used within learning environments.

The programme seeks to create opportunities for professionals from different backgrounds to understand emerging AI technologies, explore their implications for education and develop practical solutions to challenges associated with their implementation.

Through a combination of interactive virtual workshops, mentorship, collaborative discussions and a practical microcapstone project, fellows will explore how AI can support educational development without compromising fundamental educational values.

A central philosophy of the fellowship is that education is fundamentally a human enterprise. Therefore, AI should complement human expertise rather than replace the judgment, creativity, relationships and decision-making capabilities that are essential to effective education.

The fellowship is designed around three important objectives:

Building knowledge: Developing a deeper understanding of artificial intelligence, its applications in education, emerging technologies and the ethical considerations associated with AI adoption.

Strengthening professional networks: Connecting participants with a diverse international cohort, experienced mentors, education professionals and technology experts.

Promoting practical innovation: Enabling fellows to develop and implement a microcapstone project that addresses a real-world AI-related challenge within their professional or educational context.

Unlike a conventional academic programme, the EDSAFE AI Fellowship is not a full-time educational course. It is a professional development opportunity that allows participants to continue their existing professional responsibilities while engaging in structured learning and collaborative activities.

2. Three EDSAFE AI Fellowship Opportunities for 2027

For the 2027 intake, the EDSAFE AI Alliance is offering three specialised fellowship programmes. Although all three share a commitment to safe, equitable and responsible AI in education, each pathway is designed for a different professional community.

3. What Will Fellows Learn During the Programme?

One of the major components of the EDSAFE AI Fellowship is its structured learning experience.

Selected fellows will participate in a series of interactive virtual workshops led by experts working in artificial intelligence, education and related fields.

The workshops are intended to provide participants with both foundational knowledge and opportunities to explore emerging developments in AI.

The learning experience is organised around the SAFE framework, which provides the foundation for the fellowship’s approach to responsible AI in education.

Rather than focusing exclusively on technical aspects, the programme encourages participants to understand the broader implications of AI for students, teachers, educational institutions and society.

The learning experience includes:

1. Understanding the fundamentals of artificial intelligence

Participants will develop foundational knowledge of AI, including its applications, capabilities, limitations and growing influence on education.

This is particularly useful for education professionals who may not have a technical background but want to understand how AI technologies can be incorporated into their institutions.

2. Exploring emerging AI developments

The workshops will also examine emerging trends and important discussions surrounding AI in education.

Participants will have opportunities to explore how new technologies are changing educational practices and what these developments mean for the future of learning.

3. Examining ethical and responsible AI

Responsible AI adoption requires more than technological innovation. It also involves addressing questions of transparency, fairness, accountability, privacy, safety and equitable access.

The fellowship provides opportunities to examine these issues and understand how they influence educational decision-making.

4. Learning from international experts

Participants will interact with experts working in AI and education, gaining exposure to different professional perspectives, research developments and practical experiences.

5. Applying knowledge to real-world challenges

The fellowship is not limited to theoretical discussions. Participants will apply their learning through a microcapstone project designed around a challenge or opportunity within their own professional or educational context.

4. The SAFE Framework: Promoting Responsible AI in Education

An important feature of the EDSAFE AI Alliance’s approach is its emphasis on the SAFE framework.

The fellowship uses this framework as a foundation for exploring how AI technologies can be introduced into education responsibly.

The broader objective is to ensure that AI-enabled learning environments are designed around the interests, rights and needs of students and educators.

The SAFE approach encourages participants to examine the relationship between technology, educational outcomes, institutional responsibility and human agency.

For education leaders, this is particularly important because the introduction of AI into schools and educational institutions can create opportunities while also introducing new challenges.

These include:

Protecting students’ personal information and educational data.

Addressing algorithmic bias and discrimination.

Ensuring equitable access to AI-enabled educational tools.

Maintaining transparency in AI-supported decision-making.

Protecting children’s safety and wellbeing in digital environments.

Ensuring that teachers remain central to educational decision-making.

Promoting critical thinking and independent learning among students.

Through workshops and discussions, fellows will explore how these considerations can inform responsible AI adoption.

5. Learn Alongside an International Cohort of Professionals

Another important benefit of the EDSAFE AI Fellowship is the opportunity to become part of an interdisciplinary learning community.

The fellowship brings together a cohort of more than 30 participants who will learn, collaborate and exchange perspectives throughout the programme.

Participants will represent different professional backgrounds, experiences, institutions and areas of expertise.

This diversity is particularly valuable because AI in education is not a challenge that can be addressed by one professional sector alone.

For example:

Teachers can contribute practical insights into classroom requirements.

Researchers can provide evidence and analytical perspectives.

Policymakers can contribute knowledge of regulatory and institutional frameworks.

Technology professionals can explain AI development and implementation.

Education administrators can identify institutional challenges and opportunities.

Civil society professionals can contribute perspectives on inclusion, equity and children’s rights.

By bringing these perspectives together, the fellowship seeks to create a collaborative environment in which participants can develop a more comprehensive understanding of AI in education.

Mentorship opportunities

Fellows will also receive mentorship from previous EDSAFE Fellows.

This provides an opportunity to learn from individuals who have already participated in the programme and can share their experiences, professional insights and lessons from their fellowship journey.

In-person gathering

Although the programme is primarily virtual, the cohort will gather in person at least once during the fellowship year.

This provides an additional opportunity for participants to strengthen professional relationships, exchange ideas and build connections beyond virtual workshops.

6. Project-Based Learning: Develop Your Own Microcapstone Project

The EDSAFE AI Fellowship places significant emphasis on applying knowledge to practical challenges.

At the end of the learning experience, fellows will develop a microcapstone project that they can build, shape and deploy within their own professional or educational context.

This project-based component allows participants to move beyond discussions about responsible AI and explore how their knowledge can contribute to real-world improvements.

Rather than following a single predetermined project topic, fellows will have the opportunity to identify a relevant challenge based on their professional experience, interests and institutional environment.

Potential areas of exploration could include:

Developing approaches to responsible AI use in schools.

Improving digital literacy and AI awareness among students.

Exploring inclusive AI-enabled learning environments.

Supporting teachers in understanding and using AI tools.

Examining ethical concerns surrounding AI-supported assessments.

Promoting student agency and critical thinking in AI-enabled classrooms.

Exploring equitable access to AI technologies in underserved communities.

These are illustrative examples of possible areas of interest, not an official list of prescribed capstone topics.
