Organised by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, this international residency will bring together twelve selected participants for an intensive six-week programme in Brandenburg and Berlin, Germany, from August to September 2027.

The 2027 edition of the Humboldt Residency Programme will focus on the theme “Oceanic Horizons: Navigating the Future of Our Blue Planet.” The programme will provide participants with the opportunity to investigate the relationship between ocean health, human activities, environmental sustainability and the future of the planet.

Through shared working spaces, discussions, excursions, stakeholder engagements and public communication activities, participants will exchange knowledge, explore innovative approaches and develop ideas that connect academic research with broader social, political and environmental conversations.

The Humboldt Residency Programme 2027 is particularly relevant to individuals whose academic, professional or creative work has a meaningful connection to ocean-related issues and who are interested in communicating their knowledge beyond traditional academic settings.

The programme will accommodate twelve participants across three categories: five alumni of the Humboldt Foundation, three early-career researchers and four civil society practitioners. Successful applicants will receive financial support covering key participation expenses, including accommodation, travel to and from Germany, a monthly allowance during the residency and a budget for organising public engagement activities or producing final outputs.

Applications are open to eligible candidates from different academic disciplines and professional backgrounds. The application deadline is 14 December 2026.

1. About the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Humboldt Residency Programme

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is an organisation that promotes international academic cooperation and supports researchers and professionals through various fellowship, sponsorship and networking opportunities. Its programmes contribute to international knowledge exchange by connecting individuals from different countries, disciplines and professional backgrounds.

The Humboldt Residency Programme is designed to create an environment where people with different forms of expertise can engage in meaningful conversations, exchange perspectives and explore solutions to complex contemporary challenges.

Unlike conventional academic conferences or research programmes, the residency places considerable emphasis on transdisciplinary interaction. Participants are encouraged to move beyond the boundaries of their respective disciplines and understand how different forms of knowledge, experience and professional practice can contribute to addressing shared global concerns.

For six weeks, the selected participants will live and work in Germany, sharing working spaces and participating in activities that encourage collaboration. They will have the opportunity to learn about one another’s work, identify areas of common interest, develop new perspectives and connect with relevant institutions and stakeholders.

The programme also recognises the importance of communicating knowledge outside academic institutions. Participants will therefore work together to identify and implement creative ways of presenting their ideas to wider audiences.

These communication activities may include:

Public debates and discussions involving relevant stakeholders.

Media appearances and interviews.

Informal public conversations and bar talks.

Interactive workshops.

Blog articles and social media publications.

Other forms of public engagement and knowledge dissemination.

Publications and other final communication outputs.

The programme aims to ensure that the knowledge and ideas developed during the residency reach audiences beyond the twelve participants themselves.

2. 2027 Residency Theme: Oceanic Horizons – Navigating the Future of Our Blue Planet

The central theme of the Humboldt Residency Programme 2027 is “Oceanic Horizons: Navigating the Future of Our Blue Planet.”

The ocean is fundamental to the survival and future of the planet. It supports biodiversity, regulates the global climate, provides livelihoods, influences weather patterns and serves as a major source of food and natural resources.

However, marine ecosystems are increasingly threatened by human activities and environmental changes. Climate change, pollution, overfishing and habitat destruction are placing growing pressure on ocean environments and the communities that depend on them.

At the same time, changes in ocean conditions are creating serious consequences for human societies. Rising sea levels, coastal erosion and increasingly frequent extreme weather events are forcing communities and governments to reconsider how they manage coastal environments and prepare for environmental risks.

The 2027 residency will explore these interconnected challenges while encouraging participants to consider practical, innovative and forward-looking approaches to protecting marine ecosystems and ensuring the sustainable use of ocean resources.

Key areas of exploration

A. Ocean conservation and marine biodiversity

Participants will explore the challenges associated with protecting marine ecosystems and preserving biodiversity. Discussions may examine the impact of pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction and climate change on marine environments.

The programme will encourage participants to consider how conservation initiatives, international cooperation, scientific research and community-based approaches can contribute to protecting ocean biodiversity.

B. Climate change and the future of coastal communities

The effects of climate change on oceans are already being experienced in different parts of the world. Rising sea levels and extreme weather events threaten coastal settlements, infrastructure, economic activities and livelihoods.

The residency will provide an opportunity to examine how societies can adapt to changing coastal environments and develop approaches that improve resilience.

C. Innovation and the blue economy

The blue economy offers opportunities to use ocean resources sustainably while supporting economic development and innovation.

Participants will explore the role of emerging technologies and innovative industries, including:

Renewable energy generated from ocean resources.

Marine biotechnology.

Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.

Environmentally responsible maritime activities.

Innovative approaches to marine conservation.

Sustainable economic activities within coastal communities.

D. Ocean governance and international cooperation

Ocean resources are shared across national boundaries, creating complex political, economic and environmental questions.

The residency will encourage discussions about how oceans and their resources should be governed amid competing national interests, commercial activities, environmental responsibilities and societal demands.

Participants may consider the role of governments, international organisations, civil society, researchers and other stakeholders in developing effective ocean governance systems.

E. The relationship between humans and the ocean

Beyond scientific and economic considerations, the programme also invites participants to reflect on the cultural, ethical and philosophical relationship between humanity and the ocean.

Questions include:

What rights and responsibilities do humans have towards the ocean?

Should the ocean itself have legal rights?

Who has the authority or responsibility to speak and act on its behalf?

How does the ocean influence cultures, identities and collective imaginations?

How can different societies develop a more responsible relationship with marine environments?

These questions create opportunities for contributions from researchers, artists, journalists, writers, policymakers and other professionals whose work examines environmental issues from different perspectives.

Importantly, applicants do not need to belong to a marine science discipline. The Foundation welcomes individuals from all academic disciplines and professional backgrounds who can demonstrate a relevant connection to the annual theme through their work or other engagement.

3. Programme Structure, Location and Duration

The Humboldt Residency Programme 2027 will run from June to October 2027, combining virtual activities, an intensive six-week in-person residency in Germany and remote work to complete the programme’s final outputs.

The main in-person residency will take place in Brandenburg and Berlin, with excursions to institutions in Northern Germany and along the North and Baltic Sea coasts.

The programme is structured to give participants sufficient time to interact, exchange knowledge, explore relevant institutions and develop collaborative ideas.

Programme timeline

June 29, 2027 – Virtual kick-off meeting

The programme will begin with a virtual kick-off meeting on June 29, 2027.

This initial meeting will allow participants to meet one another, become familiar with the residency and begin establishing connections before travelling to Germany.

August 2–13, 2027 – Two-week residency at Schloss Wiepersdorf

The first stage of the in-person residency will take place at the Cultural Foundation Schloss Wiepersdorf in Brandenburg.

During these two weeks, participants will share working spaces and dedicate time to understanding one another’s work, exchanging perspectives and identifying opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

The setting will provide an environment for concentrated discussions, reflection and the development of new ideas around the annual theme.

August 13–September 10, 2027 – Four-week residency in Berlin

The second stage will take place in Berlin, where participants will continue their collaborative activities and engage with relevant institutions and stakeholders.

This stage will also include excursions to institutions in Northern Germany and along the North and Baltic Sea coasts.

The programme anticipates two excursions, each lasting approximately two to three days. These visits will provide participants with opportunities to encounter relevant organisations, institutions and perspectives connected to the residency theme.

September–October 2027 – Remote finalisation of output formats

Following the in-person residency, participants will work remotely to finalise the communication formats and outputs developed during the programme.

These outputs may include public engagement activities, publications, blog contributions, social media content, workshops or other formats selected by the participants.

October 26, 2027 – Virtual wrap-up event

The programme will conclude with a virtual wrap-up event on October 26, 2027.

This meeting will provide an opportunity to reflect on the residency, discuss its outcomes and bring the programme’s collaborative activities to a close.

Important attendance requirement

Full participation in the in-person residency is mandatory.

Successful applicants must be available to attend the entire six-week in-person programme from August 2 to September 10, 2027.

Applicants should therefore ensure that they can commit to the full residency period before submitting their applications. The in-person component is an essential part of the programme, and availability for only part of the six weeks will not satisfy this requirement.

4. Funding and Financial Support

The Humboldt Residency Programme 2027 provides financial support to help selected participants take part in the six-week residency in Germany.

The funding package is designed to cover important expenses associated with travel, accommodation and participation in the programme.

Successful participants will receive the following support:

A. Monthly allowance during the residency

Participants will receive a monthly allowance during the six-week residency period in Berlin and Brandenburg.

This allowance is intended to provide financial support during the in-person programme.

B. Budget for public engagement and final outputs

Participants will also receive a budget to support the organisation of public event formats or the production of the programme’s final outputs.

This is particularly important because the residency encourages participants to communicate their ideas and key messages beyond academic audiences.

The budget may support activities such as public discussions, interactive workshops, communication initiatives and other formats developed during the residency.

E. Support for participants travelling with dependent family members

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation also recognises that some participants may need to travel with dependent family members.

For such participants, the Foundation will provide suitable family accommodation and support them in arranging childcare.

Applicants who intend to travel with dependants should consult the official programme Frequently Asked Questions document for additional information about the arrangements and applicable conditions.

Important: Applicants should consult the official programme documentation for any additional details about the allowance, travel arrangements, family support and funding conditions.

5.
